The Opportunity
The City of Newton Fire Department is seeking an experienced, innovative, and service-oriented
leader to serve as Assistant Fire Chief. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, this position
provides executive leadership and operational oversight for fire suppression, emergency
medical services (EMS), hazardous materials, and technical rescue operations. The Assistant
Fire Chief serves as second-in-command and is an essential part of the department’s leadership
team.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage daily Fire, EMS, HazMat, and Technical Rescue operations.
• Supervise and evaluate Fire Captains and oversee performance management.
• Lead the department’s training and professional development programs.
• Serve as Assistant City Disaster Coordinator and Public Information Officer.
• Direct safety initiatives and serve as liaison to the City Safety Committee.
• Ensure compliance with state and federal EMS and fire standards.
• Assist with budget planning, policy development, and strategic goals.
• Respond to emergency incidents and may assume command when required.
• Act as Fire Chief in their absence .
Qualifications
• Education Required: Associate degree or equivalent in Fire Science, Emergency Medical
Services, or related field.
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration, Public Administration, or related
discipline.
• Certifications Required: Paramedic or RN exception certified through the Iowa Department
of Public Health, Fire Officer I, Hazardous Materials Technician (trained, certification
preferred), BLS and ACLS Instructor certifications (must be able to complete within one year
of appointment).
• Experience: 5+ years of progressive supervisory experience in fire or emergency services.
• Residency: Must reside within a 30-minute commute of the Newton Fire Department within
an agreed-upon timeframe.
• Performance Review: Subject to a 6-month review period post-appointment.
